R.I.P. Max von Sydow

{{embed|t=9AXV5_1583789375}} The legendary Sweden-born French actor Max von Sydow has died at the age of 90. von Sydow's career encompassed nearly seven decades, starting in 1949 with "Only a Mother" and finishing in 2018 with "Kursk". In between he had major roles in some of the most celebrated films ever made including many collaborations with Ingmar Bergman such as "The Seventh Seal,""The Magician,""Through a Glass Darkly,""Shame,""The Virgin Spring" and "Wild Strawberries". Other celebrated works include his roles as Father Merrin in William Friedkin's "The Exorcist" and John Boorman's sequel, Emperor Ming the Merciless in Mike Hodges' "Flash Gordon," the deadly Joubert in Sydney Pollack's "Three Days of the Condor," Oktober in Michael Anderson's "The Quiller Memorandum," King Osric in John Milius' "Conan the Barbarian," Doctor Kynes in Lynch's "Dune," and Major Karl von Steiner in John Huston's "Escape to Victory". He also played Jesus Christ in "The Greatest Story Ever Told," famed Bond baddie Ernst Stavro Blofeld in Irvin Kershner's non-canon "Never Say Never Again," was the voice of Vigo the Carpathian in Ivan Reitman's "Ghostbusters II," played the sinister shop owner Leland Gaunt in the Stephen King adaptation "Needful Things," served as the pre-crime agency boss in Steven Spielberg's "Minority Report," was the benevolent Judge Fargo in "Judge Dredd," was Robin Hood's dad in Ridley Scott's 2010 film, and played Lor San Tekka in J.J. Abrams' "Star Wars: The Force Awakens". Other roles included "Shutter Island,""The Diving Bell and the Butterfly,""Solomon Kane," Rush Hour 3,""What Dreams May Come,""Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close,""Hamsun,""Until the End of the World,""A Kiss Before Dying,""Awakenings,""A Violent Life,""The Wolf at the Door,""Hannah and Her Sisters,""Dreamscape,""Strange Brew,""Flight of the Eagle,""Voyage of the Damned,""The Apple War," and "Hawaii". On TV he was a notable recurring guest star on both "The Tudors" and "Game of Thrones," and starred in telemovies and event series like "Quo Vadis?,""Samson and Delilah,""Uncle Vanya,""The Diary of Anne Frank,""Citizen X,""Nuremberg" and even played Sigmund Freud in "The Young Indiana Jones Chronicles". The news was broken on Monday by his wife, producer Catherine Brelet, who says: "It is with a broken heart and with infinite sadness that we have the extreme pain of announcing the departure of Max Von Sydow on 8 March 2020."
